The combination of low atmospheric pressure and northwesterly winds generated a flood surge on Tuesday 8 January, but fortunately it peaked several hours before the spring high tide at Bawdsey Quay. Earlier in the morning a surge height of nearly 2 metres was recorded at Harwich. Had it coincided with high water, there would have been a severe flood risk to low lying properties.
